The Trading House

24 St Vincent Place

Glasgow

What is it: This is the second of The Trading House brand from the Living Ventures Group who also own other brands such as Black House Grills, Australasia, Gusto and The Botanist across the UK. Located right in the middle of the city centre on St Vincent street the interiors suggest a small fortune has been spent. They have retained the original features of the beautiful building in this large venue, the decor is makes you feel like you are stepping back in time; inspired from the East India Trading Company with décor and design based on curiosities that could have been collected by an adventurer on their travels around the globe.

Interesting fact: Glasgow has a rich history of trading especially in this area. By the 1770s Glasgow had almost cornered the British tobacco market. Street names such as Jamaica Street and Virginia Street date from this time. Glasgow became likewise involved in the West Indian sugar trade, and sugar refining soon became a major industry in Greenock as well as Glasgow. After the Americans declared independence in 1776 the main commodity traded became cotton.

Verdict: They have done an amazing job with the refurbishment and on my visit it was very busy which is great to see. This group do a great job of not ensuring their venues have their own personality whilst maintaining the service standards of a large group. There is great attention to detail here in both the food and drink and you can tell the staff have been well trained. There is also live music on every night.

Drink: Strong Gin selection here with the connection to the East India Company and the cocktail menu has a strong presence of spice also because of this. I went for a anise and black currant sling with black grapes, Bombay Dry Gin, crème de cassis, star anise syrup, lemon juice and soda water for £6.95

Food: The open kitchen has a focus on deli, rotisserie and barbecue style dishes, I enjoyed the Chicken hanging kebab with sweet chilli, ginger and garlic butter for £10.50

Prices: A bit steep in places and knowing Glasgow it might put of few folks off although its about in line with the other similar bars in the area.

Children: Kids welcome if dining

Perfect for: Having a few cocktails then enjoying a bit to eat.

Avoid if: You are more accustomed to having a cheap pint in the Wetherspoons next door.
