Strathearn Distillery

Bachilton Farm Steadings, Methven,

Perth and Kinross

History: Claiming to be “probably Scotland's smallest distillery”, Strathearn opened in August 2013. Producing an innovative range of gins, whisky and other spirits, it's is one of the most honest and authentic distilleries you will ever visit, and a project of passion for Tony Reeman-Clark and his dedicated team.

The spirit: The two beautiful stills (one more is on its way) were made in Portugal and produce a whole range of wonderful spirits. Next year their first single malt will be ready; a few lucky folk having already purchased some casks. The staff put a lot of thought into their cask selection as this is the most important factor when it comes to the final flavour of the whisky. They also produce Strathearn Gin in a number of guises: Classic, Heather Rose and Oaked Highland.

Favourite tipple: If you think you know your gin then you have to try the Highland Oaked Gin. This is where whisky meets gin – a smooth oaky gin with juniper notes, hints of citrus accented by vanilla and subtle smokiness.

Why visit? A lot of spirit producers go on about “small-batch” and “micro-distilling” as a way to make their products seem more handmade and artisan. Here at Strathearn they can stay true to these claims. This is authentic and hands on distilling at its best. The team here are very passionate about what they do and it comes across in spades. You have to book ahead for experiences (they don't call them tours here). With the distillery tastings, a gin lover's and connoisseur's experiences you will not be disappointed. If you are serous about your booze then you have to book in either a one, three or five-day whisky-making package. go to www.starthearndistilery.com for more details.

Interesting fact: The distillery has recently been celebrated a double win at the Scottish Craft Distillers Association Awards, scooping the much coveted gold award in the Scottish craft spirit of the year category for their Highland Oaked Gin and young distiller of the gear going to 22-year old Zak Shenfield.
