Stockbridge Tap

Raeburn Place, Edinburgh

What is it: I used to live in this part of the capital and Bert’s Bar was one of my locals, so imagine my shock when I saw it had become The Stockbridge Tap. I'd known of “the Tap”, but thought it was on another site, so I quickly shed my tears and headed in to check out this award-winning ale house. The interior is simple but effective, with natural woods, tiles and a beautiful classic pub bar which takes centre stage.

Interesting fact: It's been named Pub of the Year for Scotland and Northern Ireland by the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra), which described the venue as "a specialist real alehouse, offering unusual and interesting beers from all over the UK”.

Verdict: The moment I pushed through the doors, thoughts of Bert’s were erased from my memory. This is a local pub with friendly, attentive staff and a solid food and drink offering. Their beer choice is constantly updated and the staff know their IPAs from their Porter. I would happily call this place my local if I still lived in the area.

Drink: As well as seven rotating cask ales, there is a strong selection of around 70 single malts and even a great wee selection of gins (about 15). I really enjoyed a half-pint of the Double Chocolate Porter 4.4% from the Tryst Brewery for £2.

Food: The drink is the star here, but the Tap also has a reputation for decent pub grub including fish and chips, hotpots, burgers and sandwiches. Their burger nights are famous, apparently.

Prices: As they should be for the area, though a lot of the new places are hiking their prices up.

Alfresco: Just out the front for some rays and fresh air.

Children: I didn't see any in on my visit.

Perfect for: Letting the staff educate you on some amazing beers and ales.

Avoid if: You prefer paying over the odds for beer in nearby George Street.
