Whisky Still by Andy Gemmell

Aberfeldy Distillery

Aberfeldy, Perthshire

History: Founded in 1898 by John and Tommy Dewar, it is classed as a Highland malt distillery and the eponymous single malt is also the heart product in the Dewar’s blended whisky range. The building is a beautiful example of classic distillery architecture.

The whisky: Aberfeldy sources its water from the Pitilie Burn, prized for its purity and rich deposits of gold and minerals. This, combined with Scottish malted barley, creates a deliciously rich, easy-drinking dram. Aberfeldy offers 12 and 21-year-old single malts, as well as an innovative range of single-cask bottlings. Aberfeldy 12 is a great all-rounder, well-balanced with a fruity and honey character. It is smooth on the palate with aromas of fresh pineapple and buttery notes.

Favourite dram: I enjoy Aberfeldy 12 with ice, which some say is sacrilege but it tastes great chilled.

Why visit? The recently refurbished visitors’ centre is one of the most cutting-edge distillery experiences in the country. It is family-friendly with a range of tours, a heritage centre, café, shop and a bar where you can sample some Dewar’s cocktails. If you are serious about Scotch you can even book to create your own blended whisky to take home with you.

Interesting fact: Tommy Dewar was the youngest son of John Dewar, founder of Dewar’s Whisky. He was the driving force behind the brand’s success during the late

1800s. As well as an excellent whisky salesman, Tommy

was the longest-staying resident at London’s Savoy Hotel and embarked on a two-year world tour visiting 26 countries while selling Dewar’s Whisky and penning a book about his travels named

A Ramble Around The

Globe.
