As a child of the 1940s, I was brought up to observe football and rugby teams, at all levels, wearing strips which were instantly recognisable through positive colour and layout.

In recent years, strips have changed so frequently and into such absurd combinations of design that I find it difficult to maintain any affinity.

Is it quite coincidental that the more complicated the strip the less positive are the results?

It has been yet another disastrous, embarrassing Six Nations campaign for the Scotland team and again the old guff about revitalising the game, attracting more youngsters, etc has been spouted by those in charge. Nothing will be done of course.

But this is not the most depressing thing. The sad fact is that if Scotland somehow beat a decidedly average England team at Murrayfield on Saturday, for many rugby "supporters", that one result will constitute a successful campaign.
