FORMER Lord Provost of Glasgow, Alex Mosson, and his daughter, Kirsteen, are both to leave the city council at next year's elections.

Mr Mosson, a councillor for 23 years, said yesterday it was time to let someone else have the opportunity to represent his Anderston ward at the City Chambers.

He admitted the new system of proportional representation would impose a new system and make new demands, and he thought it would be better to make way for people who could adjust to that.

"I have enjoyed my time on the council and it has been a great honour to represent Anderston, and the city, " he said.

Mr Mosson is one of 12 councillors who will not seek re-election.

They also include his daughter, councillor for Wyndford, who wants to spend more time with her 17-month-old daughter, Caoimhe.

"I am taking a break from it, and wouldn't rule out returning in the future, but politics isn't exactly accommodating for people with young children and my daughter is my big priority, " she said.

"I have enjoyed working with my father. He has given me a lot of help and encouragement but still let me do my own thing - we have been in committees sometimes in which we have taken a different view, but we have never fallen out."
