Anna Watt, of the showbiz sisters Fran and Anna, died today, bringing to an end one of the of the most enduring stories in Scottish variety.

Ms Watt, 85, died of natural causes at the St Andrew's Hospice in Coatbridge. Her elder sister, Fran, died in October 2003 aged 81.

In a career spanning almost their entire lives, the siblings were the epitome of the kitch approach to Scottish light entertainment.

They became famous in Scotland for their garish trademark mini-kilts, tartan bunnets, and fishnet tights, and were easy targets for mockery.

As the Prince Sisters in the 1950s and 60s, they gained a loyal overseas following performing cheesy standards in the music hall and international cruise circuits.

It was not until the 70s, and their transformation into Fran and Anna, that they found success in their homeland.

They became popular stalwarts of the STV Scottish country dance show Thingummyjig and even found themselves with a regular spot on Terry Wogan's television chat show in the 1980s.

The Watt sisters were born and raised in Coatbridge and toured the clubs of Lanarkshire as a child act.

In 1989 the sisters were awarded with British Empire Medals in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for their services to light entertainment.
