CONSTRUCTION on a huge new Lidl supermarket in Lanarkshire is under way after planning permission was granted.
The new store, on Carlisle Road in Airdrie, is the second of two new Lidl stores in the area with the first, in Bellshill, opening earlier this month.
To mark the start of the Airdrie store’s construction, Lidl welcomed North Lanarkshire Council leader Jim Logue to break ground at the site, alongside members of Lidl’s senior management team.
Scheduled to open later this year, the new store will have a 1255 sqm sales area and features facilities including an in-store bakery and customer toilets with baby changing. Solar panels will also be installed on the roof, as well as rapid electric charging points in the associated car park.
The Airdrie store will also bring up to 40 jobs to the local area, which has seen ongoing investment in the region since the retailer opened its regional distribution centre in Motherwell in 2019. The site will additionally allow for a drive thru and future retail opportunities for other businesses, providing more jobs once they are trading.
Gordon Rafferty, Lidl GB’s regional head of property, sad: “We’re very excited to have ‘broken ground’ at our new Airdrie site and it was great to welcome council leader Jim Logue to assist. Construction starting at the Carlisle Road store comes after a successful opening at our other new North Lanarkshire site, in Bellshill. Construction starting at the Airdrie store marks the next stage in our ongoing investment in the region.”
Mr Logue said: “It’s great to see construction get underway for the new Lidl store in Airdrie. With the retailer’s Scottish headquarters a stone’s throw away in Motherwell, Lidl has shown its continued commitment to providing new jobs and opportunities for the communities across North Lanarkshire.”

Louise Macdonald: Creativity flows when business and arts combine
There is never any shortage of talk about the importance of cross-sector collaboration, and how the pandemic showed us what can be achieved when we are uniting around a common purpose.
Quite right too – it is and it did, and we need it to continue.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
