ABERDEEN engineering giant Wood has been appointed to provide engineering support services for South African energy to chemicals heavyweight Sasol.

Wood has entered a five year agreement under which it will help Sasol develop new facilities in South Africa.

The value has not been disclosed.

However, the contract will provide a boost for Wood in its attempts to reduce its reliance on the North Sea oil services business amid challenging market conditions.

Firms that operate oil and gas fields in the North Sea are cutting spending in areas other than essential maintenance in response to the plunge in the crude price triggered by the coronavirus.

Under the leadership of chief executive Robin Watson, Wood has been trying to increase its exposure to sectors such as petrochemicals and environmental engineering.
