Harrison & Hetherington sold 78 clean cattle, 35 cast cows, 1,362 prime hoggets and 409 cast sheep at St Boswells yesterday.

Prime cattle at the sale were heavy and sold in line with the national trend. Fifty prime heifers sold to a top of 238p/kg to average 208p (-6p), while 28 prime bullocks peaked at 230p to average 210p (-4p).

There were also 35 cast cows in the rough ring which sold to £1,170 and 175p to average 134p (+3p).

Prime hoggets sold to £110 and 225p for Beltex to average 199p (+8p).

In the cast sheep ring the average was £82 overall which would be slightly back on the week. Heavy ewes sold to £129 for a Suffolk and averaged £96, while light ewes peaked at £105 for Cheviots and averaged £82.

The firm also sold 27 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 224p/kg to average 193p (+2p), while 26 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 205p and levelled at 180p (+5p).

There were a total of 71 young bulls at the sale yesterday which averaged 170p overall (+5p).

The 49 prime, beef-bred young bulls sold to 225p and averaged 185p (+10p), while 22 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 168p and levelled at 137p (-10p).

In the rough ring 20 cast dairy cows sold to 151p and averaged 103p (+6p), while 67 cast beef cows peaked at 168p and averaged 130p (+6p).Fourteen cast bulls made up to 167p and averaged 123p (+19p).

There were also 1,048 prime hoggets that sold to £125 and 260p/kg to average 200p (-8p), while 102 new season prime lambs peaked at £150 and 355p to average 238p (+9p).

In the cast sheep ring 120 heavy ewes sold to £130 for Texels and averaged £91 (-£6), while 62 light ewes peaked at £88 for a Greyfaced and levelled at £64 (-£6).

Messrs Craig Wilson sold 1,115 prime hoggets, 39 Spring lambs and 264 cast sheep in Ayr yesterday. Heavy hoggs would be sharper on the week and good export types were still at last week’s high rates, however a big proportion of leaner types at the sale pulled the overall average back to 202p.

Top price of the day was £114 for a pen of 59kg Beltex or 240p for another pen of 47kg Beltex from the same consigner. A good run of 496 Blackfaces topped at £95 for one pen or 211p for another.

New season lambs peaked at £119 for a pen of three Texels.

Cast sheep were down in numbers this week and harder to cash. Heavy ewes peaked at £160 for a Texel, while Mules were up to £91 and Blackfaces sold to £65.
