Willie MacDiarmid is leaving the board of Glasgow-based Smart Metering Systems after six years in the role of non-executive chairman.

He will stand down after the company’s annual meeting in June, and will be replaced by Miriam Greenwood. Ms Greenwood is currently senior non-executive director at SMS, where she has been a member of the board since 2014.

The announcement follows last month’s sale of a minority of assets to Equitix Investment Management for £291 million. Employing more than 1,200 people out of 12 UK locations, SMS supports the installation and management of energy meters.

“It has been a privilege to have chaired SMS over a period of sustained growth and this together with watching the development of the senior team has given me great personal satisfaction,” Mr MacDiarmid said.

“The sale of a portfolio of our assets and the launch of an exciting strategic path for the group means the AGM is appropriate time for me to step down as chair.”

Graeme Bissett will step up to senior non-executive director, while solar industry specialist Jamie Richards has joined the board as a non-executive with immediate effect.
