HARRISON & Hetherington Ltd sold 73 clean cattle, 36 cast cows, 1,435 prime hoggets and 257 cast sheep at St Boswells yesterday.
There were handy weights forward in the prime cattle sale where fifty-one prime heifers sold to a top of 235p/kg to average 214p (-3p), while 19 prime bullocks peaked at 224p to also average 214p (+8p). Three young bulls peaked at 218p and averaged 173p (n/c).
There was a strong show of 36 cast cows in the rough ring which sold to £1238 and 181p to average 131p (+7p).
Prime hoggets sold to £108 and 262p for Beltex to average 191p (-3p).
In the cast sheep ring the average was £87 overall. Heavy ewes sold to £143 for Suffolks and averaged £107, while light ewes peaked at £111 for Cheviots and averaged £86.
The firm also sold 26 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 236p/kg to average 191p (+1p), while 17 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 196p and levelled at 175p (-14p). Five prime, dairy-bred bullocks sold to 153p and averaged 134p (n/a).
There were a total of 67 young bulls at the sale yesterday which averaged 165p overall (-23p).
The 42 prime, beef-bred young bulls sold to 228p and averaged 176p (-17p), while 25 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 170p and levelled at 147p (+6p).
In the rough ring 147 cast dairy cows sold to 154p and averaged 100p (+7p), while 60 cast beef cows peaked at 173p and averaged 123p (-1p). Ten cast bulls made up to 142p and levelled at 104p (-13p).
There were also 1,086 prime hoggets that sold to £122 and 264p/kg to average 207p (+6p), while 67 new season prime lambs peaked at £142 and 323p to average 229p (-14p).
In the cast sheep ring 173 heavy ewes sold to £145 for Beltex and averaged £97 (+£7), while 37 light ewes peaked at £97 for a Greyfaced and levelled at £70 (+£5).
Messrs Craig Wilson sold 2042 sheep at Ayr yesterday comprising 384 cast sheep, 1,642 prime hoggets and 16 new season Spring lambs.
Spring lambs got off to a good start, selling to £120 for a Texel and 269p/kg for a pen of three Texels to average 242p overall.
There was a mixed show of prime hoggets forward with good export hoggs selling between 220p and 240p however, heavy hoggs again were harder to cash with the whole sale averaging 204p. Top price of the day was £108 for two separate pens. Top price per kilo was 254p for a pen of Beltex, while Blackface hoggs sold to £92 and to 216p.
The 380 cast sheep forward sold to £184 for Texels and £75 for Blackfaces.
