LAWRIE & Symington held its annual sale of 6,700 store lambs of all classes in conjunction with Livestock Marketing (Borders) at Lanark on Friday. The show of 4,356 Blackface wedder lambs was topped at £60 and averaged £46.96 (+£1.52 on the year).

The 750 cheviot lambs forward also peaked at £60 per head, while 1000 store lambs of other breeds sold to a top of £69.50 for Charolais x Beltex.

Messrs Craig Wilson sold 821 store cattle at Newton Stewart’s big bullock sale on Friday.

Beef bred steers peaked at £1,230 a Charolais cross and 214p for a Limousin, while 568 beef bred steers with an average weight of 520kg sold to average 182p/kg. Heifers sold to £1,030 for a Limousin cross and to 232p for a different Limousin cross heifer. The 219 heifers at the sale averaged 487kg in weight and sold to average179p/kg.

The firm also sold 1,583 prime lambs at Ayr yesterday to a top of £85.50 per head for Beltex and 196p/kg for Texels, to average 154p overall (+2p on the week).

There were also 715 cast sheep forward which peaked at £138 for Texels. Mule ewes sold to £58.50 while Blackface ewes sold to £44.50.

Harrison & Hetherington sold 58 clean cattle, 69 cast cows, 1,336 prime lambs and 574 ewes at St Boswells yesterday.

Thirty-four prime heifers peaked at 223p/kg and averaged 182p (n/c), while 23 prime bullocks sold to 218p and levelled at 178p (-11p).

In the rough ring 69 cast cows sold to £1,364 and 183p to average 125p (+0.5p).

The prime lambs sold to £95 and 218p for Beltex to average 160p (-2p).

In the cast sheep section the overall average for 574 head was £56.51 (+£4). Heavy ewes averaged £70, while light ewes averaged £41.

The firm also sold 29 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 229p and an average of 199p (n/c), while 29 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 214p and levelled at 188p (-7p). One prime, dairy bred bullock made 148p/kg. Ninety-two prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 209p and averaged 169p (-4p), while 43 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 170p and levelled at 126p (-12p).

In the rough ring 281 cast dairy cows sold to 135p and averaged 84p (-8p), while 211 cast beef cows peaked at 189p and averaged 122p (+6p). Sixteen cast bulls made up to 185p and averaged 118p (n/c).

There were also 1,909 prime lambs that sold to £100 and 235p/kg to average 159p (-5p).

In the cast sheep ring 175 heavy ewes sold to £99.50 for Texels and averaged £51 (n/c), while 161 light ewes peaked at £49.50 for Blackfaces and levelled at £31.
