Scotland’s two largest airports have both enjoyed a bumper September, according to new figures.

Edinburgh Airport catered for more than 1.07 million people in the month describing that as its best ever September performance and a fifth month in a row of seven-figure passenger numbers.

At Glasgow Airport the 896,226 people it saw was the largest volume in a decade, buoyed by Davis Cup tennis and the Scotland Germany international football match.

In the Scottish capital domestic passengers grew 10.7 per cent to 470,668 thanks to greater demand for flights to London City and Stansted.

International traffic was up 7.2 per cent to 602,873 thanks to more people using the Ryanair network, including to Dublin, with destinations such as Malaga, Stockholm and Abu Dhabi proving popular for other airlines.

At Glasgow international traffic grew 16 per cent from 457,458 to 530,856 on the back of the sporting events as well as new Wizz Air routes, to Vilnius in Lithuania and the Polish city of Lublin, which launched on September 17.

Domestically there was a 12.3 per cent rise from 325,313 to 365,370 with London airports proving the major driver.

Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, hailed a 31st consecutive month of growth and said: “September was an extremely positive month, both in terms of passenger growth and for new routes.”
