Lace made by a rare survivor of the traditional Ayrshire textile sector is hitting the world's top catwalks this season after a tie-up between a Scots manufacturer with a top London fashion house.

The "large diamond" pattern from the Abercromby collection is by MYB, a lace and madras-making company based since 1900 at Newmilns, whose fabrics for garments and furnishings are regularly sourced by Hollywood as well as the high-end hotel industry.

The firm, which employs 59 people and has an annual turnover of £2.8m, is expecting to increase sales of its range of 80 lace fabrics on the back of the current trend for the traditional labour-intensive patterned fabric in womenswear. Gemma Yeudall, business development assistant for the firm said that, as well as Pavane, whose designs feature in the current issue of Vogue magazine, the firm is working with up-and-coming Scots designers Mairi MacDonald, Judy R Clark and Elizabeth Martin.

Georgina Edmonds, Pavane designer said: "We were attracted to using MYB lace after a long search through traditional French and Italian lace companies yielded no results, our intern, who had studied at the Glasgow School of Art, showed us some samples. It was modern and graphic and had an honest raw feeling by using cotton, but the quality of production was still very high."

As well as its links with the high fashion sector, managing director Scott Davidson is currently leading an aggressive drive to build new markets for MYB and forge links with designers in overseas markets, venturing to hotel trade shows as far afield as Dubai and Malaysia.

It is also developing flame-proof fabrics for contract work with high-yielding clients, such as luxury yachts-builders, and has previously woven fabric for the fashionable Soho House private members club chain.

MYB textiles feature in the Harry Potter studio tour attraction near Watford, and played a prominent part in the dressing of the 1860s White House for the 2013 Oscar-winning film Lincoln.

Founded as Morton Young and Borland in 1900, MYB Textiles is now the only producer in the world manufacturing patterned lace with original Nottingham Lace Looms, some of which are over 90 years old and up to 1220cms wide.
