What is it?

Party-inspired portable wireless speaker.

How will it change my life?

If life has taught me anything, it's that useful things are only advantageous when they are easily at hand. Take a few months ago when a gang of us were staying in a quiet Highland hotel for a friend's birthday. The food and drink flowed as did copious merry banter, but one crucial thing was missing: music.

Everyone had simply assumed someone else would bring the tunes. I removed my portable speaker from the suitcase prior to setting off as I thought it was a bit small and wouldn't register above the predictably loud voices of the group.

I swore this mistake would never be repeated and set about trying to find a portable speaker that would protect my ears from the drunken ramblings and any future 2am renditions of I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles). I think I may have found sweet relief in JBL's latest speaker, the Xtreme.

Good points?

The design is of the typical JBL standard which means it is very durable and won't break if dropped or sat on. The splash-proof stitched casing is perfect for listening poolside. Connectivity is provided by Bluetooth, a 3.5mm jack socket and two USB ports for charging. There is no learning curve so anyone will be able to pick it up and start playing their favourite music immediately.

The sound quality is exceptional with even tones no matter what genre is playing. Amplification is impressive too, especially with bass heavy songs which boom all the way to the back of most rooms. This is can be aided by the connect technology which pairs similar JBL products to boost more sound. What sets the Xtreme apart from most portable speakers is the battery life with one charge lasting around 15 hours.

Bad points?

The Xtreme is not as easily transported as the slick marketing makes out. It wouldn't fit in a pocket or small laptop bag and weighs two kilograms. Fortunately a carry strap is provided.

Best for ...

Party animals and those with an aversion to cheap, tinny speakers.

Avoid if ...

Your idea of a party involves a quiet game of bridge.
