SCOTTISH drinks wholesaler Inverarity Morton has invested £3 million in a switch to new headquarters in Glasgow’s south side.

The company, part of drinks veteran Sandy Bulloch’s business interests, is now based at a 100,000 square foot warehouse and office facility in Thornliebank Industrial Estate.

The move, which followed a five-month refurbishment of the new premises, comes after the firm spent nearly 40 years at its previous base in Pollokshaws.

The Bulloch family, which has a 75 per cent stake in the wholesaler, and offloaded the Loch Lomond Distillery Company for more than £210m last year, has purchased the Thornliebank site.

It will lease the building back to the wholesaler, which will use it to house all 140 of its Glasgow-based staff.

The premises includes extensive warehousing and 16,000 sq ft of office space.

Inverarity also has a base in Milnathort and employs more than 200 staff across its two sites.

Stephen Russell, who has been managing director of Inverarity Morton for 10 years, said the company had been looking for a new depot for some time but had found it difficult to find the right site.

He said: "As a wholesale business, we're delivering goods up and down the country five days a week for our customers so being near a central road network was possibly the most important criterion in our search beyond simply the amount of space we would need to manage the handling and transportation of goods.

"We have simply outgrown our current unit and this site, with nearly 80,000 sq ft of warehousing space and three to four acres of land, will see us well long after I've retired."

Mr Russell added that the proximity of the new premises to its previous home had also been decisive. He said: "Glasgow has been our home from the beginning and most of our staff live in the locality of the depot, so ensuring the move impacted as little on their working lives as possible was a key concern."
