Hampden Park is set to be offered the chance to stage a Diamond League meeting next summer with UK Athletics officials understood to be ready to hold their showpiece at the National Stadium.
With London's Olympic Stadium unavailable for up to two years – it is closed for refurbishment ahead of the arrival of new tenants West Ham United – a number of venues have been considered as a replacement for the two-day meeting in order to retain one of two British stops on the IAAF's global calendar.
Although a return to Crystal Palace, which previously hosted the event, has also been given consideration, an option to host the Diamond League on the temporary track being constructed for the Commonwealth Games is now thought to have emerged as the leading contender.
Glasgow 2014 officials had considered a number of options to test out their venue, with a children's competition among the foremost proposals. However, the opportunity to attract the world's leading athletes, including Usain Bolt, to the city either before or after the Commonwealths could prove an irresistible lure.
Next month's event in London sold out within hours, with the public clamouring for tickets to see a stellar line-up which includes the Jamaican sprinter. It will, for the first time, also incorporate an adjoining Paralympic Grand Prix. No-one from UK Athletics was available for comment last night.
Steph Twell, above, will continue her build-up to a tilt at the world championships when she headlines the field at the annual Guernsey Golden meeting this weekend.
The 2010 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist could double up over 800 metres and 1500M in a bid to step up her pursuit of the qualifying times for Moscow.
Places at the European Under-23 Championships in Tampere, Finland, this summer are the target for those competing in the two-day trials in Bedford. Discus thrower Nick Percy will be looking to improve his own Scottish record at under-20 level while teenage sprinter Zoey Clark is another with a qualifying standard already for the European event at 400m following a personal best at Loughborough last month.
"These are important competitions and we have a handful of athletes who have serious ambitions for the Euro age-group championships," said Stephen Maguire, scottishathletics director of coaching. "For others, it is about competing at a higher level, facing a couple of races in a short period of time, or throwing or jumping against people with better PBs and trying to improve."
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
