RAITH ROVERS are set to name Ray McKinnon as their new manager after the Brechin City manager missed out on the top job at St Mirren.

McKinnon, 44, emerged as Rovers' number one candidate to replace Grant Murray following the interview process earlier this week, which included the likes of Alec Cleland and Gary Naysmith.

He was formally offered the position on Wednesday but Raith were forced to endure a nervous wait as he was also considered for the vacancy at newly relegated St Mirren.

However, St Mirren's decision to hand the managerial reins to Ian Murray will mean the Kirkcaldy side get their man.

The finer details of the switch were being ironed out last night, including the length of McKinnon's deal and an amicable departure from Glebe Park, where he only signed a new contract in April.

Both clubs, who were in regular contact yesterday, are expected to co-ordinate announcements this morning.

McKinnon, who had two brief spells at Stark's Park as a player in 2000 and 2003, will work closely with his former Dundee United team-mate Maurice Malpas, the current director of football at Rovers.

Malpas is expected to have a more active role within the new coaching set-up than he had under the previous regime.

While the full make-up of McKinnon's staff remains undecided, the club are hopeful there will be a place for first-team coach and Rovers stalwart Laurie Ellis.

McKinnon joined Brechin in 2012, building a side widely lauded for its attacking flair. They finished in fourth spot in League One this season before exiting the Championship promotion play-off at the hands of Alloa Athetic.

Despite his success in Angus, McKinnon has been keen to secure a return to full-time football which, allied with their modern training facility at the Michael Woods Sports Centre in Glenrothes, has made Raith an attractive option.

The former Aberdeen, Nottingham Forest and Livingston defender also worked as a technical development officer for the Scottish Football Association in 2012.
