Jonas Gutierrez, the Newcastle United winger, has been given the all-clear from cancer.

The 31-year-old revealed in September that he was receiving treatment in his native Argentina after being diagnosed for testicular cancer.

However, the Argentina internationalist announced on Twitter last night that doctors had given him the all clear. His post read: "Today I was given a medical discharge. Thank you very much to all who accompanied me at this time, especially my family, my parents, brothers, godmother, friends . . ."

Gutierrez joined Newcastle from Real Mallorca in July 2008 and became a fans' favourite as he played a significant role in the club's Championship title win and return to the top flight. He was largely unused by manager Alan Pardew last season and was allowed to join Norwich City on loan for the second half of the campaign.
