Dundee have signed the former Scotland striker David Clarkson, the club has announced.

The 28-year-old has been training with the Dens Park club for the past few weeks and has impressed Paul Hartley so much that he has been given a one-year deal.

Clarkson started his career at Motherwell, where he scored 56 goals in a little more than 250 appearances.

He was capped twice by Scotland and earned an £800,000 move to Bristol City in 2009, where he played alongside Hartley. He has been a free agent since leaving Bristol's other team, Rovers, at the end of last season.

Hartley told the official Dundee website: "We are delighted to get him signed up. I know him well from playing alongside him.

"He hasn't really played as a main striker for a few years but we see him as a centre-forward. He will give us good competition, good experience and a good goal return at this level. He's impressed us over the few weeks we've had him in training."
