Lorenzo Amoruso admits he's written off Rangers' chances in the Old Firm showdown, but is still hoping for a shock.

The former Rangers captain played in many Old Firm showdowns and the Italian will watch Sunday's clash with interest.

But he isn't confident that his old side can spring a surprise.

Amoruso said: "I'm pessimistic for Sunday, because right now Rangers are not a great team.

"But always in a derby, especially an Old Firm one, anything can happen.

"I hope Rangers can surprise Celtic. In these games you get to see who is worthy of wearing the shirt and who will stand up.

"Also there are many different ways to win a game."

Amoruso - who had a six-year spell at Ibrox from 1997 - admits he's nothing but good memories of the encounter.

He said: "First of all, Rangers are a faith, not a football team.

"In Italy, I played in big games, but I think the only game comparable to the Old Firm atmosphere would be Boca Juniors against River Plate in Argentina.

"I feel lucky to have played in this game and I won so many derbies against Celtic.

"I actually made my Rangers debut in an Old Firm game after being injured for ten months having undergone three operations.

"I should not have played, but Walter Smith saw I was doing well in training and said he wanted to put me on the bench.

"After 20 minutes, our defender got injured and I went on! We won 2-1 and I could not have had a better start.

"The Old Firm game I remember with most pleasure was a League Cup semi-final in 2002. We only won 2-1, but we absolutely thrashed Celtic that day and it was amazing because Bert Konterman scored for us.

"Rangers are in a bad way just now and there are a lot of problems at the club, but I just hope they be restored to the top because they are a great club."
