St Mirren striker Cammy Smith has welcomed the appointment of Alan Stubbs but is well aware that a new broom may want to sweep clean.
Stubbs has already spoken of taking a close look at the Saints squad who have just won promotion into the top flight and Smith is determined to make an immediate impression on the former Hibs manager.
“It’s always the case of having a clean slate when any new manager comes into a club,” said the striker.
“Everyone needs to try and impress him from day one to try and get into the team so this will be no different. He’ll assess who’ll be staying and it’s up to us as individuals to work hard in pre-season and do enough to be a part of his plans.
“We are excited, when it was clear Jack Ross was leaving, if you’d asked the boys if we would be pleased with Alan Stubbs being appointed then we would all have been delighted with that.
“He’s a manager who’s done really well at previous clubs and hopefully he can continue that with us.” St Mirren open their campaign against Dundee and Smith has maintained that game will take the Paisley side’s full focus. Saints play Steven Gerrard’s Rangers game in their second fixture but it is getting off to a good start that is paramount to Smith.
“The second game of the season against Rangers is the one which everyone will speak about but our opening game at home to Dundee is the one we are focusing on.
“The manager will be drumming it into us to get ready for that one.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
