CELTIC are running the rule over Feyenoord left-back Miquel Nelom.
SportTimes can reveal the 26-year-old Dutch internationalist is under consideration by the Scottish champions as a potential replacement for Emilio Izaguirre.
The Honduran left for Al-Fayha earlier in the window and Nelom could be the man to come in and offer competition to Kieran Tierney.
Nelom came through the youth ranks at Feyenoord and after a two-year stint with Excelsior has been back at the Rotterdam outfit since 2011.
It is understood Celtic are aware of Nelom, who can also play at centre-half, as he is now entering the last year of his contract under former Rangers favourite Giovanna van Bronckhorst.
With less than 12 months left on his current deal, the man who is thought to be worth around £1milllion with two Netherlands caps to his name could be brought in at a cut price.
While dislodging Tierney at left-back may be unlikely given how the 20-year-old is performing, having someone else who could also fill in at centre-half with Erik Sviatchenko and Dedryck Boyata out injured would certainly help his cause.
Nelom was linked earlier in the window with potential moves to both Stoke City and Espanyol, while only last week Watford were mentioned as a potential suitor for the defender.
During an Eredivisie championship-winning campaign last time out, he played just 20 times – and 16 the term before – compared to the 39 appearances during the 2014/15 campaign.
Speaking last month about Izaguirre’s departure, Rodgers said: “I had a look at it. Emilio was offered the chance of a lifetime financially for three years.
“He’s been a great servant to the club and if I thought I couldn’t cover, it couldn’t happen."
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
