Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic will have to wait until next Friday before discovering the full extent of his UEFA punishment.

The Croatian defender was given a straight red card on Wednesday night during Celtic’s 3-0 second leg Champions League qualifier against Alashkert for a high boot on Jefferson Reis and will automatically miss the next game against Rosenborg.

Simunovic will be suspended for the first-leg in Glasgow against the Norwegians but with UEFA’s controls, ethics and disciplinary body scheduled for a July 27th meeting, the defender could find that the severity of the sanction is increased.

Meanwhile, Celtic captain Scott Brown is looking for an improved performance over Rosenborg when the teams meet next Wednesday.

The Parkhead side will host the team who sacked manager Kare Ingebrigtsen last night and after edging out the Norwegians courtesy of a solitary James Forrest goal in Trondheim last year, Brown is looking for a more commanding performance when the teams meet again at the same stage of the competition.

“We played them last year and we had a disappointing result at home but we went away and managed a 1-0 victory,” Brown told Celtic TV. “Here is hoping we can get a little bit better this year.”

And the Celtic captain has also backed Moussa Dembele and Odsonne Edouard to strike fear into defenders this term given the manner in which they have struck up an understanding this season.

“They have got pace and power and everything you want,” said Brown. “Defenders are going to be scared of them if they keep playing the way they are playing and hopefully we can keep them fit.

It remains to be seen what effect the sacking of Ingebrigtsen will have on Rosenborg ahead of the crucial qualifying tie.

Rosenborg scrapped into the second qualifying round after a 93rd minute penalty which saw off Icelandic side Valur but the 3-2 win wasn’t sufficient to save his job. The Trondheim side are just two points adrift of Brann in the top-flight but the decision has been made to axe him before the next qualifier.

Ingebrigtsen won seven trophies in four years at Rosenborg but the Norwegian champions must now look to appoint a new man ahead of next week’s Parkhead clash.

Elsewhere, sources inside Celtic also rebuffed suggestions that there is interest in Simunovic from Fernerbahce, a report that had originated in the Turkish media. Last summer the Croatian was on the verge of a move to Turin which fell through at the last minute.
