MORTON have announced that striker Jai Quitongo has put pen to paper on a new one-year contract with the club.
The highly-rated 19-year-old committed himself to the Cappielow club until 10 June 2018 by signing a new deal on Tuesday.
Quitongo has scored six times in 23 games for Jim Duffy's side this season in addition to making his debut for Scotland's Under-21 side in November last year, but is currently out with a knee injury.
The club revealed in a statement that the youngster's form attracted a bid from Doncaster Rovers last summer, but he has resisted a move away to agree to extend his stay in Greenock.
"We’re absolutely delighted that Jai has committed himself to Morton for the foreseeable future, to the summer of 2018," Duffy told gmfc.net.
“He’s a potentially outstanding talent and we’re thrilled that Jai and the club have come to an agreement to have him stay.
"There was obviously a lot of speculation surrounding the boy just before he got injured.
“He’s only really had about 20 first-team starts, so he maybe thinks it’s in his interests as well to get a bit more experience, and if he keeps developing and working hard he may get that move further down the line.
“If he’s enjoying his football and playing regular first-team football then he might feels it’s in his best interests to stay for a bit longer. He’s a boy with terrific potential and hopefully he can fulfil some of that potential with Morton.
“But I think for everybody at this moment in time, the most important thing was that Jai wanted to sign and we were keen to get it done, so we’re delighted to get it over the line.”
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
