YOUR report on bus lane fines (“Bus lane fine figures double for visitors to city than locals”, The Herald, May 31) states: that a spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council said “it doesn't matter where you live. If a driver is found to be illegally driving in a bus lane a charge will be issued'. What she will not admit to is that this is the sole purpose for the introduction of bus lanes in the city.

Cameras make millions of pounds from fines for the council without there being a single shred of evidence that bus lanes assist traffic through the city. On the contrary, there is a stack of evidence that proves they cause nothing more than disruption and congestion while trying to drive through the city.

In a previous letter I stated that drivers' attention is based solely on avoiding collision of any sort - pedestrians, other vehicles, animals and so on. This is the reason why it can be very easy to miss roadside signposting which the council is only too well aware of, yet continues with bus lane fines that I would describe as a disgraceful money-making scam.
