The errors include Glasgow City Council, which said about five road signs had been corrected since January 2003 at a cost of around £300 for the Crowne Plaza hotel after an error by a council employee.

A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council said: "Road signs were made up with 'Crown Plaza' and had to be changed to 'Crowne Plaza'.

Dundee City Council confirmed that two signs had been corrected since January last year at an approximate cost of £90 each for removing and replacing the signs.

A spelling mistake resulted in Mentieth Street instead of Menteith Street, and a "typing error" led to Drumlanrig Drive instead of Drumlanrig Place.

Renfrewshire Council said two road signs which were wrongly spelt last year had been replaced at a total cost of £60. No further details were released about the errors.

A West Lothian Council spokeswoman said: "Spelling errors have been corrected on five West Lothian street signs since 2003.

"In 2003, two name plates were changed from Mansfield to Mansefield at an estimated cost of £300 due to council error.

"In 2007, Livingstone was changed to Livingston in one nameplate at a cost of £160. This sign was inherited from another authority.

"In 2008, a nameplate spelt Munrow was changed to Munro at no cost to the council due to contractor error, and a nameplate was corrected to Harestanes from Haresdanes at a cost of £168 due to council error.

"There have been no recorded mistakes on road signs since 2003."

Mansefield is in East Calder, Livingston Street is in Addiewell, Munro Way is in Knightsridge, Livingston, and Harestanes Road is in Armadale, a council spokesman confirmed.

A road number error for the Clachan junction signs by an Isle of Lewis Council employee led to two "direction signs" being corrected and the authority splashing out £1,216 and 12p in 2007.

A mileage error by a member of staff also cost the council £50 this year for the main road in Harris.

A spokeswoman for the council said: "Two new direction signs at the Clachan Junction erected as part of the Spinal Route Scheme - the sign had A865 rather than A867 and there was some information missing from the original signs, this has now been rectified.

"The cost of replacing the signs at the Clachan Junction was £860.12 and the costs of the new signs was £356, therefore the total cost of the works was £1,216.12."

East Dunbartonshire Council said it had paid out £2,667 for correcting street name signs since January 2003.

But a spokesman said: "Not all of these costs would be as a result of spelling errors, some signs are replaced due to damage in transit or installation. When errors have occurred it has not always been the fault of a council employee."

No further details were released.

East Lothian Council said 28 pedestrian fingerpost signs had been corrected in 2004 that had metric distances instead of imperial at the approximate cost of £500. There were no recorded spelling error corrections to signs.

A spokeswoman for Edinburgh City Council said: "We keep records of replacement signs, but not of the reasons for replacing them."

A spokesman for Inverclyde Council said: "The only mistakes we have had is where a contractor has perhaps put Avenue instead of Street or vice versa, but has always corrected it at their expense."
