A taxi driver was allegedly robbed at knifepoint after taking a fare across Edinburgh.

Three men are alleged to have threatened the driver with the knife before making off with the takings after the fare from the city centre to Moat Terrace in the Slateford area at around 5am.

The men ran into a close after the incident.

Police Scotland were on the scene in minutes and a police spokeswoman said negotiations took place before the men came out of the block of flats.

The three men were detained, Police Scotland said.

A Police Scotland Spokeswoman said: "Police in Edinburgh were called to Moat Terrace at around 4.45am this morning following the assault and robbery of a taxi driver who had picked up a fare from the city centre.

"He was presented with a knife when he dropped his fare at Moat Terrace.

"Following negotiations, three men were detained at the scene and police are continuing to carry out enquiries to establish the circumstances."

There are several police cars, vans and ambulances at the scene throughout the morning.

Police said the taxi driver was treated at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for facial injuries.
