VISITORS to the historic heart of Glasgow are being urged to get lost.

They are being encouraged to find their way around a temporary maze which has sprouted in George Square.

It is hoped to be a fun, educational way of getting people interested in green issues.

The green labyrinth will be open until Thursday, and it is hoped it will help to highlight the city's many parks and open spaces.

Councillor Liz Cameron, chair of the city's Green Year, opened the temporary maze with the help of children from Milton Community Nursery.

She said: "We believe it is vital for us and our citizens to continue the transformation of this wonderful city of ours from an industrial to sustainable Dear Green Place.

"Glasgow is focused on the future, growing from our past and delivering a green city which supports green jobs and a green economy.

"Already during this Green Year, I have been truly inspired by the enthusiasm of Glaswegians, especially our young people and children, who are playing their part in making our city greener, cleaner and healthier.

"I hope everyone enjoys the green maze during its time in George Square, and gets an opportunity to pop along and learn more about Glasgow's bid to be greener.

"Every positive green step can change how we take in our communities across our city and helps Glasgow to cut its carbon emissions and grow our green future."

The maze has 8ft high walls which covers an area the equivalent to half a basketball court, and flooring at its entrance which generates electricity.

The flooring turns the motion of footsteps into energy to power mobile devices and dancers will be trying it out at various times during the day on Saturday and Sunday.

The public will also be able to try out the state-of-the-art floor and visit stalls in a marquee promoting sustainability, recycling and the city's many parks and open spaces.
