Giorgos Giakoumakis has opened up on his departure from Celtic.

The striker left for Atlanta United in the MLS in February 2023 after making it clear he wanted away from Glasgow.

He enjoyed his time in a Hoope shirt, scoring 26 goals in just 18 months under Ange Postecoglou.

However, when it came to seeking fresh terms and a pay increase, it was forthcoming for the Greek international, and so he sought other opportunities.

He told the Offside with Taylor Twellman podcast: "I said, ‘Okay, you know what? Now you have to give me what I deserve. I was waiting. And then they said no.

"At the end of the day, I was like 'Do I want to go there again with this s*** weather - maybe even worse than Glasgow?' One year in Glasgow and I went out with my son in the park one time. That is miserable. I said (to Midtjylland) 'Thank you, but I at least need the normal weather' - that was the reason.

“Carlos [Bocanegra, Atlanta vice president and technical director] was the only one, the only director that flew to Glasgow just to meet me. And I really appreciated that. They showed me straight away that, you know what, you’re really important. We don’t care if you’re going to be able to sign for [us] or not, we just want to meet you.”

Speaking about the club in a more positive light, he continued: “It’s a massive club, and the fans are making it a massive club. They (the fans) just breathe for football. Nothing else. Nothing else."
