Swedish producer and DJ Avicii has been found dead in Oman at the age of 28, his publicist has said.

The artist has collaborated with the likes of Madonna and Coldplay and is possibly best known for his world-wide 2013 chart-topper Wake Me Up.  

Publicist Diana Baron said in a statement that the  Avicci, whose birth name is Tim Bergling died in Muscat, Oman’s port capital. 

"The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time," the statement said.

He had retired from live performing in 2016, citing health reasons. He had suffered from health problems for several years, including acute pancreatitis, in part due to excessive drinking. He had his gallbladder and appendix removed in 2014.

No cause of death was announced, and Avicii's representative said no further statements would be issued.

Scots superstar DJ and producer Calvin Harris was one of the first to pay tribute describing his death as "devastating news".

He described Avicii as "a beautiful soul, passionate and extremely talented with so much more to do".

He added: "My heart goes out to his family. God bless you Tim x"

Avicci was a pioneer of contemporary electronic dance music (EDM) who has won two MTV Music Awards, one Billboard Music Award and earned two Grammy nominations.

His death comes just days after he was nominated for a Billboard Music Award for top dance/electronic album for his EP Avicii (01). He was nominated alongside his peers, who have taken EDM mainstream of late - The Chainsmokers, Calvin Harris and Kygo.

After announcing his retirement from performing live he said: "I know I am blessed to be able to travel all around the world and perform, but I have too little left for the life of a real person behind the artist."
