ITV have suffered an online backlash from angry Scottish rugby fans for their description of Dark Blues captain Greig Laidlaw.
The injured Scotland player was in the ITV studio at Twickenham working as a pundit as part of the channel’s coverage of the Calcutta Cup match between England and Scotland.
However, as if Scottish fans’ day wasn’t bad enough after the 61-21 defeat at the hands of their rivals, they fans were left in disbelief at the way ITV chose to describe the 31-year-old scrum-half.
When he appeared on screen, the caption underneath read: “Greig Laidlaw, Lost each of five tests v England, twice at Twickenham.”
A screenshot of the caption featuring Laidlaw was shared by Twitter user Eric Northcote, who wrote: “Truly pathetic captioning. Greig Laidlaw was a guest. Show some respect.”
His tweet, posted Saturday, yesterday (SAT) evening, has been retweeted over 680 times with a further 1,221 likes.
Outraged fans were quick to respond on Twitter. Etherley Jackson wrote: “I saw that flash on the screen, I wasn’t sure I’d read it right. #Badshow.”
Another fan said ITV should change its captioning for England’s World Cup-winning coach and commented: “Should flash up next week Clive Woodward – lost every Lions tour test as player and coach. Why not put the caption – Laidlaw Scottish captain & World player of year finalist?”
