Ruth Davidson has got engaged to her partner Jennifer Wilson.

The Scottish Conservative leader revealed the happy news on Twitter this morning.

She posted a picture of an engagement ring with the caption: "So, I've been away for a few days as I had an important question to ask. Delighted Jen said Yes. Very happy."

A Scottish Conservative spokesman said: "Normally we wouldn't comment on personal issues but everybody in the party will want to wish Ruth and Jen the very best."

The couple have been congratulated on Twitter by well-wishers, politicians and celebrities.

Ms Davidson stood for the Conservatives in the Glasgow North East by-election in 2009 before becoming an MSP in 2011.

She was elected party leader in 2014 and became the official leader of the opposition at Holyrood earlier this month after winning 31 seats in the Scottish elections.

Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale, who recently revealed she has a female partner, tweeted: "Massive congratulations to you both from Louise and I."
