Britain's Ian Holmes won the men's 17 km race for the third time in 2hr 43min 20sec. beating Simon Booth into second place from a sprint finish by just two seconds.

ELGIN's Graeme Allan finished a close third in the Hammer when helping Shaftsbury Barnet Harriers into fourth place in the European Junior Clubs Championships at Copthall Stadium, London. Allan's throw of 58.03m puts him top of this year's British under-20 rankings.

Badminton

Youth Olympic player Fiona Sneddon (Lochgelly) crashed out of the Canadian Open Championships, beaten 11-2, 11-2 in the quarter-finals by the veteran Canadian Denyse Julien.

However, fellow youth Olympian Robert Blair did better, beating Lanace Hunter (Canada) 8-15. 15-10, 15-9.

Sneddon and Sandra Watt (Edinburgh) also went out of the women's doubles, Watt suffering from a calf muscle injury which had earlier forced her singles' withdrawal, but there was better fortune for the men's doubles pair of Alistair Gatt (Edinburgh) and Craig Robertson (Fauldhouse), who beat Allard and Van Keukelom of Canada 15-8, 15-8.

Bowling

ROBERT Paterson (Chirnside) won the Berwickshire Bowling Association champion of champions title on the Tweedmouth Green at Berwick beating Neil Whiteford (Lauder) in the final.

The ladies title went to Margaret Riley (Coldstream) who defeated Heather Donaldson (Gordon).

Hammy McMillan's world championship winning squad was back in winning form as their season got underway in Olso yesterday winning both the Norway Cup and points in the European World Tour series.

In the closing stages, the Scots faced strong Norwegian opposition beating former national champion Tordod Andreasson 6-5 in the semi-final and then Paul Trulsen who skipped last year's world championship team in the final 7-3. Results:

Football

WITH the majority of central league clubs taking the option of a holiday weekend break the junior football focus was on Ayrshire this weekend.

Kilbirnie kept in pole position in the western league following their 3-1 win over Auchinleck Talbot.

Ladeside took the lead when youngster Jim McLachlan coolly lobbed the ball past Derek Hoy and in the 37th minute McLachlan made it two when he headed home from a Mark Ferris cross.

Talbot were thrown a lifeline in the 71st minute when a Gary Graham pass was slotted past keeper Andy Heafey by Marco Minchella but 10 minutes from time substitute Steve Roberts took full advantage of a defensive mix up to restore Ladeside's two goal lead.

Troon's run of poor results continued with a 2-0 defeat by Irvine Meadow. Rod Lennox put Meadow ahead after five minutes and shortly after Andy Sim headed home a David Greir cross to make it two. To make matters worse for Troon goalkeeper Chris Kelly was red-carded near the end.

Saltcoats Vics got their first win of the season with a 2-0 win over Annbank. New signing from Rob Roy Jim Arthur opened the scoring with Steven Breen adding the second.

Kilwinning were dealt a blow in their game against Largs when keeper Stuart Robertson was carried off with a dislocated shoulder. Despite the set back Kilwinning equalised an earlier James McNally opener for Largs when centre half Steven Moore prodded home a corner from Stevie Farrell.

In the 60th minute Tommy Sloan set up new signing Colin Ferguson for number two and a combined effort between David Sharkey and Tommy Sloan made it three.

Cumnock came from behind to beat Irvine Vics by 4-1 but their win was less than convincing as Vics keeper Colin Traynor had a hand in all three first half Cumnock goals.

Vics took the lead through Raymond Donnachie after 15 minutes but 10 minutes later keeper Traynor punched the ball out to Davie Walker on the edge of the box and he duly dispatched it back into the net. The keeper was at fault again when a poor throw out was intercepted by Walker who crossed for David Pew to put Cumnock ahead.

Five minutes later Stevie McIntyre headed the ball across goal, Pew shot and Traynor fumbled the ball over the line. The fourth goal was the only highlight of the second half when Stevie Agnew crossed for ex-Kilmarnock midfielder Mark Skilling making his debut for Cumnock to head home.

In the only game in the central league a Paul Quinn penalty in the 70th minute gave Glencairn a 1-0 win over St Anthonys.

In their local derby with Beith Dalry Thistle raced to a 2-0 lead after 30 minutes with a Jim Kirkland header and a tap in from Kieran Donnelly. Derek Cook pulled one back for Beith before half-time but Dalry held on for a 2-1 win.

Golf

A repeat of the final for the last two years is still possible as local holders Watsonians looking for a record equalling tenth win and Uppinghamians from Rutland are in separate semi-finals of the 47th Queen Elizabeth Coronation School FP Foursomes Trophy at the Royal Burgess, Edinburgh this morning.

Watsonians, Halford Hewitt Trophy holders also and expecting to have winning Walker Cup team member David Patrick available for the first time after the SAAB Club Championships at Barassie yesterday, play 1974 winners Carthusians (Charterhouse) while Upp ingham meet Morrisonians who have never won the trophy.

GLASGOW High Kelvinside were impressive 14-2 away winners over Stirling University on Saturday, in their opening national league game of the season,.

Tennis

Top placings in Sunderland on Saturday give Scotland's Nicola Payne and Alan Mackin high hopes of being in at the finish of this week's LTA Satellite Tournament in Glasgow.

Tayport's Payne lost won through to the singles final at the Northumberland venue only losing out to 2nd seed Manisha Malhotra from India.

Payne won the first set 6-2 but Malhotra Malhotra recovered from her sluggish start and hit top form to take the remaining sets 6-1, 6-0 for victory.

Paisley 17 year old Alan Mackin lost out in the semi-finals of the men's tournament going down to 4th seed Ladislav Svark from Latvia at the end of a close three setter 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

Speedway

Edinburgh Monarchs gave themselves a great chance of winning the Knock-Out Cup when they beat Arena Essex 54-36 in the first leg of the final at Armadale.

Peter Carr scored 14 points, Blair Scott 13 and James Grieves 12 as Monarchs were never in trouble on the night.

Monarchs led by 18 points with two heats to go but failed to add to their advantage. Results:

CARL Stonehewer inspired Workington Comets to a 49-43 victory over Glasgow Tigers at Ashfield yesterday in the second leg of the Charity Cup.

The Englishman top scored with 18 points from six outings and was well backed by Brent Werner who collected 14.

None of Tigers top men were able to match their speed on an almost perfect afternoon, Paul Bentley finishing with a disappointing 11 points and veteran Les Collins only notching eight.

Tigers, 21-points adrift after the first leg at Workington, were 27-21 ahead after eight heats but Comets turned on the power.

They claimed 5-1 heat wins in three of the last five races to take the #500 prize which will be donated to a charity of Workington's choice. Results:

Triathlon

Aberdeen's former British and current Scottish women's champion Steph Forrester won the Belgrade International Triathlon in Yugoslavia adding valuable points to her world ranking tally and her overall bid for a place at next year's Olympics.

She was, and she finished first in 1h 58min 43sec - over two minutes clear of BEatrice Mouton and Christine Hocq in 2nd and 3rd - her two French opponents who started the day with superior world rankings. Results:

Wrestling

EIGHTEEN-year-old Kevin Ballantyne of Glasgow proved on Saturday that the lightweight class is now the most exciting category in British Backhold wrestling. What did Ballantyne do that is so dramatic? After all, on Saturday he only won a third and a fourth place but what he did do was to beat Rab Clark for the third time this season. However this time he won by three falls to nothing in his second encounter of the day with Clark.

Their first match was in the semi-final of the 11st 7lb at Redesdale which Clark won easily. Then in the semi-final of the 14st class Ballantyne had his dramatic victory first with a Backheel and then with a Buttock.

Heavyweight champion Rab McNamara, who has now been undefeated for three years, coasted to two easy victories at Langdale and Redesdale, and at the moment seems unstoppable, winning in an almost casual fashion. Results:
