Glasgow v

Newport

SOUTH African-born Roland Reid yesterday linked up with his new Glasgow Caley team-mates for the first time and underlined his ambition to be as famous as his great-uncle, Don Kitchenbrand, the Rangers goalscoring legend.

The 21-year-old forward flew in too late to make tonight's Celtic League clash with Newport at Bridgehaugh, but he is expected to make his debut in next weekend's encounter with Neath at Hughenden.

Reid said after watching the Reds train at Stirling: ''I may have been born and raised in South Africa, but I have considered myself Scottish since I was very young.

''My dad and grandad were from Greenock and I have been shown lots of newspaper clippings of Uncle Don's exploits with Rangers. It seems he was a fantastic player and I would love to go as far in rugby as he did in football.''

Reid admitted his ambition was to get established with the Reds and he hopes to attract the attention of the Scotland selectors - an aim which was backed up by Caley coach Richie Dixon. ''The lad definitely has the potential to go for it and we are delighted to have him on board,'' he said.

Dixon also admitted he was thrilled to welcome World Cup men Glenn Metcalfe, Gordon Simpson, and Gordon Bulloch back to his line-up, but took time out to pay tribute to the youngsters who deputised for them during the tournament.

Reds will be without first-choice loose-head prop David Hilton, who has a slight thigh strain, although Dixon is confident of his returning next week.
