Premier 2
East Kilbride gave themselves a mathematical lifeline by beating Watsonians 26-18 at Torrance House. Incredibly for a side short on firepower recently, EK notched four tries to gain the bonus point that keeps them afloat. They would, however, have to beat Selkirk by more than 70 points next week, and hope that Grangemouth take nothing when Jed-Forest visit. The Grangemouth v Jed clash was postponed since Jed have two players away on duty with the Scotland sevens squad.
Premier 3
Hutchesons'/Aloysians clinched the Premier Division Three title with a straightforward 37-15 victory over relegated Berwick. Star man for H/A was Ewan Baillie who had two tries, three conversions and two penalties. Bottom side Hillhead/Jordanhill produced one of their better performances in going down 24-20 to Edinburgh Accies. Stewart's/Melville coasted home 45-19 against Dundee. Tries from Fraser Deeming (2), Grant Smith (2), Stewart Clark, Kenny Milligan, and Simon Rowan gave them their bonus point and they now sit in second place above Biggar on points differential. If Biggar take a single point from their remaining game against champions Hutchesons/ Aloysians, they will go up.
National Leagues: NL1
Ross High kept their hopes of promotion and even the NL1 title alive with a comfortable 51-10 win at Kilmarnock. Ross narrowed the gap between themselves and Dunfermline, but Corstorphine beat Preston Lodge 30-19 to also stay in the hunt. They had bagged
three tries through Byron Tavadia (2) and Nick Tu Whangai, but it took until deep into stoppage time before Dave Zavaroni crossed for the bonus try.
NL2
Cartha/Queen's Park took a massive step towards promotion when they edged out nearest rivals for the second spot, Dalziel, with literally the last kick of the match. Gary Grant's try and five Robbie Little penalties seemed to have been in vain when Dalziel made it 22-20 in stoppage time, but up stepped Little to slot his sixth successful goal and pinch it 23-22. Madras now seem doomed to relegation after being thumped 48-0 at Langholm.
NL3
By virtue of a tense 9-6 win over Highland, Garnock managed to ease away from relegation and send Portobello and Highland down. Hero for Garnock was veteran full back Kurt Jacobsen with three penalties.
NL4
Results went according to form in the three top NL4 clashes. Ellon scored nine tries including three by Ross Lines in sweeping Allan Glen's away 57-12. Howe got their bonus point win in beating Forrester 25-10, but only just. Terry Turpie claimed the fourth try in stoppage time. Hamilton too, kept in touch winning 19-0 at Lochaber, but the Whitecraigs demise continued as they crashed to a 25-0 defeat at Helensburgh.
BT Cellnet Bowl: Quarter-final
In an incredible quarter-final tie, Cumnock knocked out Aberdeenshire 19-18 and now go through to meet Hawick Harlequins. A stoppage time penalty by Chris McDonald did the trick.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
