RUGBY: CLUB NEWSAND TEAMS
MONTHS in the wilderness may soon be over for GHK's two international forwards, Alan Watt and Shade Munro. The club expect the injured pair to be back playing this month.
Both have been assiduously training for several weeks after prolonged injuries. Andrew Little, GHK's director of rugby, explained that neither player would be rushed back into the first XV. However, both could be in the team when GHK open their SRU Tennents 1556 Cup campaign on February 24 with a home tie against Annan, front-runners in the national league's fourth division.
A programme of regional league matches will be played over the next three days, beginning this evening at Braidholm (Glasgow Southern v Kilmarnock) and the Gytes (Peebles v Selkirk), continuing tomorrow morning with Watsonians v Haddington at Myreside, and finishing with a handful of matches on Sunday afternoon. A full programme of Border League games has been listed for tonight, so the choice is wide enough for anyone wishing to see more than an international match this weekend.
Sunday rugby allows Kenny Logan the chance of a game this weekend, even though he is to be on the replacements' bench for Scotland in the international against France at Murrayfield tomorrow. The wing is in the Stirling County team for the regional league match against West of Scotland on Sunday at Burnbrae.
West expect to field all four of their youngsters who are to play for Scotland in the Under-21 international against France at Myreside this afternoon - Alan and Gordon Bulloch, Guy Perrett, and David Jamieson.
Similarly, Derek Stark, Stuart Lang, Cameron Glasgow, and Darren Burns could fit in a club game on Sunday as well as playing in the A international against France today. Heriot's have named Lang in his accustomed berth at full back for the Sabbath match against Dundee High School FP at Goldenacre, Glasgow may be called into Heriot's team, and Boroughmuir could call on Stark and Burns for the visit to Biggar.
Melrose, who visit Jed-Forest tonight, have appointed their New Zealand flanker, Nick Broughton, as the club's first youth development officer. His duty will be to promote rugby in the primary schools in the area.
Broughton, who joined Melrose this season from Otago, is to make his A international debut for Scotland this afternoon, having previously played for New Zealand at school, under-17, and under-19 levels. He qualifies for Scotland through his maternal grandmother, and during a previous sojourn in the UK he played for the Scottish Exiles in the 1993-94 under-21 district championship.
Hawick, with Greig Oliver restored at full back, this evening have a Border League match that will hansel Langholm's floodlights at Milntown.

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
