Three men were in serious conditions in hospital last night after a large-scale disturbance at a pub which resulted in four men suffering stab wounds.
The disturbance, involving an unnamed number of people, began just after midnight on Saturday in the Honours Three pub in St Andrews Road, Pollokshields, on the south side of Glasgow.
Strathclyde Police said the disturbance spilled out on to the street, where the four men were stabbed.
The men - aged 21, 49, and two aged 23 - were taken to the city's Victoria Infirmary for treatment.
Police said one of the 23-year-olds discharged himself from hospital early yesterday but the three other men were detained. Their conditions were described as serious but stable.
Police said they were treating the attack on the 49-year-old man and the 23-year-old who remained in hospital as attempted murder.
The attacks on the other 23-year-old and the 21-year-old are being treated as serious assault.
A spokeswoman could not confirm last night whether anyone else was being sought in connection with the attacks.
A cordon was put in place yesterday and the pub remained closed as police forensic experts carried out examinations inside and outside the property.
Detective Sergeant Alasdair Barlow, of Strathclyde Police, based at Cathcart, appealed for anyone who was either in the Honours Three or outside it when the disturbance occurred to contact police.
The incident comes less than 20 months after a botched drive-by shooting outside the Honours Three.
In June 2007 a suspect fired at two men sitting in a van outside the pub. At least four shots were fired, hitting the pub wall.
The men escaped unharmed but detectives said they were treating the attack as attempted murder. The previous March, an area close to where the shots were fired was fitted with closed circuit cameras.
The stabbings also happened yards away from the spot in neighbouring Kenmure Street where 15-year-old Kriss Donald was abducted by a gang while walking with a friend on March 15, 2004.
The teenager was kidnapped and later stabbed 13 times and set on fire while he was still alive.
Gang members Imran Shahid, 29, his brother Zeeshan, 28, and their cousin Mohammed Faisal Mushtaq, 27, were jailed for life in November 2006 for the race-hate murder.
Glasgow SNP MSP Sandra White last night expressed concern at the latest attack.
She said: "It is concerning that such a large disturbance involving four stabbings can occur in any area of the city.
"That it occurred in an area which has a history of violence and tragedy is very worrying.
"Police must do all they can to allay the fears and concerns of local residents and business owners. Glasgow City Council licensing chiefs must also consider whether to launch their own investigation into this latest incident."
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
