IAN W Thomson (Letters, December 27) raises the notion of Alex Salmond becoming Deputy Prime Minister in another coalition government, and remarks that this prospect "could of itself be enough to swing voters".

How this prospect ever come about is not explained - Mr Salmond is no longer First Minister nor leader of the SNP, both positions being held by Nicola Sturgeon. Deputy First Minister is John Swinney, deputy SNP leader is Stewart Hosie, MP, and it is Angus Robertson who is the leader of the SNP group of MPs.

Alex Salmond is standing for the Westminster constituency of Gordon, and if successful he will become an MP in May, but no more than that at this stage. He is not standing for any position which would allow him to become Deputy Prime Minister.

Quite who these voters are who could be swung by the entirely false prospect that Mr Thomson raises is not clear, but whoever they are, they should perhaps be credited with more intelligence.
