Sirqus Alfon talks about his new show I Am Somebody.
1 Tell us about your Fringe show
We had the premiere five days ago and we were blown away by the reactions! The crowd was loud and played a big part to make the show what it was, and that's exactly what we wanted. I Am Somebody is a high-tech variety show which gives crowd participation a new meaning. Live cameras and recording tech is used to create magic and make everyone somebody in the show, without pulling anyone out of their seat.
2 Best thing about the Fringe?
Nowhere else can you see such diversity and cultural mix. I love that there's always an incredible show to take part in almost any hour of the day. The nightlife is very exciting.
3 Worst thing about the Fringe?
That a lot of good artists are drowning in the neverending pile of shows and this makes artists compete with each other when they really should help each other out. It's also worrying that the venues are charging so much.
4 How many years have you been coming to the Fringe?
This is the second.
5 Favourite Fringe venue?
The Nightclub at the Gilded Balloon - Teviot. I haven't had time to go anywhere else.
6 Best Fringe memory?
When Hardeep Singh Kohli came to our house and cooked for us. Great guy!
7 Best heckle?
I haven't heckled yet and I don't want to give anything away :)
8 Craziest on stage experience?
The show we did the last time we were here was so fun. Almost the entire Gilded Balloon staff was standing up dancing and singing along.
9 What’s on your rider?
Cheddar cheese, whisky and ginger lemon cake. That's what I imagine if we had one.
10 How do you wind down after a show?
There's no winding down, we still haven't sold out so we are doing street promotion until we drop.
11 What do you love about Scotland?
The people are so caring. It feels like everybody is your grandmother.
12 What do you like about Edinburgh?
Just walking around talking to people and seeing where it takes you.
13 What’s the most Scottish thing you’ve done?
Always carrying an umbrella.
14 What kind of jokes do a Scottish crowd seem to respond to?
Jokes that break the social patterns.
15 Favourite joke?
"I found dove in a soapless place" - Axis of awesome
16 Favourite Scottish food/drink?
Love the indian food here and the whisky. Lucky pig is a nice all veggie place with great food/drinks.
Sirqus Alfon will perform I Am Somebody at the Gilded Balloon Teviot until August 29.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
