Alice Fraser: Ethos is on at Underbelly, Bristo Square - Friesian, during August.

  • What is your Fringe show about?

Failure, artificial intelligence, fatherhood.

  • How many times/many years have you appeared at the Fringe?

I sprang fully formed from the top of Arthur’s seat, untold generations ago.

  • What’s your most memorable moment from the Fringe?

I forget.

  • What’s the worst thing about the Fringe?

You never go to sleep at a normal time, and you think you’re fine and then you have a nervous breakdown.

  • If you were not a performer what would you be doing?

Nursing orphaned hyenas on the brutal plains of sub Saharan Africa. Gotta get laughs somehow.

  • How do you prepare for a performance?

I write a show, and then I do it badly for many weeks or months until I have worn down my self-loathing into self-acceptance. Then I take it to the Fringe.

Being in Edinburgh. It’s a lovely city.

  • What’s the most Scottish thing you’ve ever done?

My Jewish grandfather changed his name from Friedenberg to Fraser. That’s pretty Scottish, right?

  • Favourite Scottish food/drink?

I mostly live on late night peanut butter and toast and tea during the Fringe.

  • Sum up your show in three words

Beginning, middle, end.

Show summary

Humans have always been fascinated by non-human minds. From the Golem, to Frankenstein's monster, to artificial intelligence – computers who could think, and threaten civilisation. Imagine an AI: a brilliant but naive mind, newly created. Now imagine that mind learning about our world by watching a comedy show. Alice Fraser (The Bugle and BBC Radio 4) explains our society of contradictions to a new robot mind. A silly, funny, smart show that explores what it is to be human.
