Keanu (15)
three stars
Dir: Peter Atencio
With: Jordan Peele, Keegan-Michael Key
Runtime: 100 minutes
PETER Atencio’s comedy is a one-joke pony, but fortunately it’s a good ‘un. The deal is that a cute kitten owned by LA drug lords winds up one day at the front door of nice, normal Rell (Jordan Peele). Nursing a broken heart, Rell falls in love with the little fella, so when the kitty cat becomes the focus of a tug of love between rival gangs, Rell and his equally square cousin Clarence (Keegan-Michael Key) just have to wade in. Decidedly patchy, but when the comedy works Keanu is an inspired comedy treat. And yes, the kitten is very cute.
Ice Age: Collision Course (U)
four stars
Dirs: Mike Thurmeier, Galen T Chu
Voices: John Leguizamo, Ray Romano
Runtime: 94 minutes
THIS is the fifth instalment in the franchise, and by the law of movie averages the concept should be growing as stale as fish fingers left in the freezer for 20 years. But the characters, from Manny the mammoth (voiced by Ray Romano) to Sid the sloth (John Leguizamo) are so strong, and the jokes so well targeted at all ages, that Ice Age remains fresh as a daisy before a saber-tooth tiger steps on it. Here, the gang are once again threatened by a cataclysmic event coming, in this case a giant asteroid heading for Earth, and must turn to each other if they are to survive. Familiar but fun.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
