A one-hit wonder at a festival is always a dangerous beast. Can they keep a crowd going on a set that simmers through the anticipation until the main event song.

There's a decent assembly for Hozier, the Irish indie singer-songwriter, as he takes an early evening slot on the Main Stage. The sun has risen for him and festival-goers in Dress Up Friday costumes are waiting to be convinced.

Hozier is a very decent performer but, and for an Irishman, he lacks a certain charm needed to keep a festival crowd entertained. There's an overwhelming sense of disengagement from the crowd, which is enjoying Hozier but not finding any excuse in his alt-rock hits for a right good dance around.

During a set that does much to showcase his brace of glossy guitars, the most stirring is to be found in his cover of Ariana Grande's Problem and his other well-kent single, Someone New.

Boldy, he tries to coerce the crowd of tipsy girls in denim shorts and taps-aff lads into a slightly complicated sing-a-long of  To Be Alone, but this falls on tone deaf ears and from tone deaf lips, so is quickly abandoned.

Of course, Take Me To Church closes the set and steals the show, the big-chorus, foot-stomping finisher that everyone's been waiting for.

You hearing humming of the chorus for minutes after the performance has ended.

Hozier's excellent but not an excellent fit for the Main Stage of T in the Park.
