Calum Stewart & Heikki Bourgault

Hunter's Moon

(CH/2)

Flautist and piper Calum Stewart left his native Morayshire and his frontline position in popular Gaelic band Mànran to live and seek musical stimulation in Brittany, and he has found it in a lively partnership with Breton guitarist Heikki Bourgault. This second album reaffirms their close understanding as well as Stewart's bright, forthright playing on the uilleann pipes and passionate mobility on flute, the instruments sometimes being double tracked for maximum impact. The tunes have a brisk, shapely quality and Stewart's often percussive attack on flute is illustrated on the mini epic An Coire Bhreacain, where his expressive phrasing gets an opportunity to really develop and stretch out. Bourgault also takes advantage of double tracking to turn in a fine improvisation on Stewart's nicely-paced Schottishe Kerlou, and the very French-sounding La Légende De La Cane offers strong proof of Stewart's integration into the Breton way of life. All in all, a fine studio set that really captures the immediacy of the duo's live performances.
